Columbia Business School (CBS) has made a name for itself not only as one of the world’s oldest business schools but also through its status as one of the six Ivy League business schools. Founded in 1916, Columbia has grown rapidly and moved from offering undergraduate courses to offering executive education programmes.
As an institution that works with a lot of business and corporate leaders, CBS knows the types of challenges that face many in the business landscape. As such, the school decided to launch a think tank called The Hub whose primary aim is to help company executives find solutions to emerging issues. Whereas past corporate leaders may have focused on putting customers’ or shareholders’ needs first, the modern business environment requires these leaders to address environmental issues, manage the social impact of their company and foster ethical behaviour.
It’s against this backdrop that The Hub was launched in late 2022 as an initiative that brings business leaders, policymakers and scholars together to address three key issues: the future of capitalism, effective business innovation, and the mix of business, artificial intelligence and democracy (BAID).
According to CBS, tackling these issues will help equip both current and future business leaders to bring about positive change, which is something Massimo Acquaviva – 2R Capital Investment Management Limited co-founder and co-CEO – is passionate about. Mr Acquaviva is also an alumnus of Columbia Business School.
Bringing Positive Change
Through The Hub, Columbia Business School aims to bring together stakeholders from academia, government, industry, the non-profit sector and the wider public to share ideas on how to combat the world’s most pressing challenges.
The Hub’s theme for its first two-year term – Business and Society – aligns with this, given the role business plays in wider society in general and how organizations can share economic and innovative opportunities with the rest of the world.
Through a mix of events, curriculum, research and community engagement, The Hub will look to ensure that businesses and policymakers play their part in making a meaningful difference in the current societal climate.
The choice of the three issues is intentional, as The Hub sees value in addressing key concerns around each. These include:
- Future of Capitalism – As the world grapples with recession concerns and high costs of living, capitalism’s place (and shape) in the future must be examined deeply.
- Business, AI and Democracy (BAID) – Hyper-partisan conversations and misinformation are posing serious threats to democracy (especially on social media platforms), and therefore, exploring the impact of social and traditional media is necessary.
- Think Bigger Innovations – This initiative will focus on the processes and strategies that make corporate innovations successful and attainable.
